Q&A with Paige Carbon
Paige, you have a really unique background as someone who started as an oncology researcher and is now leading innovation in the health tech sector. What skills or qualities helped you to find success in making that transition?
"It could seem like a very daunting transition, but my passion for science and healthcare is evident in every role I take on. Even though I’m not in the lab anymore, I still have a patient-centric focus. Skills like critical thinking and a research mindset have helped me immensely — especially in data analytics, account management, and revenue strategy. Communication has also been huge. Even as a researcher, I enjoyed talking to physicians and patients. Now, I can communicate with just about anyone — whether it’s a company executive, a service provider, or a patient. That flexibility is essential in any role."
You've built an impressive career across health-tech, pharma, and startups. What drives your passion for working at the intersection of innovation and healthcare?
"There’s so much always happening, especially with technology. I never thought of myself as tech-savvy, but through WTE, I realized I’m more immersed in tech than I thought. I enjoy learning new software, solving problems in new ways, and bringing technology into pharmacy operations — like APIs for integration, cloud services, and data analytics. These tools make things more seamless for patients and clients. I’ve come to love discovering how new technologies can improve healthcare delivery."
You’ve held leadership roles in both large corporations and startups. For women considering a similar path, what advice would you offer?
"It’s been wonderful to experience both. Large pharmaceutical companies offer structure and clarity in your role — and that works well for many. But when I joined a startup in the bioinformatics space, I was doing a bit of everything. I had the chance to wear many hats, learn new skills, and sit with different leaders to understand their challenges. I’ve realized that I thrive in the startup environment — in the chaos, the unknown, and the constant change. If you’re willing to grow and adapt, there’s a lot of opportunity in that space."
You’re a firm believer in the power of connections. Can you share a moment when a relationship changed the course of your career or sparked new purpose?
"Yes — I’ve had the privilege of working under female leaders for the past several years. These women have not only mentored me, but supported me through life transitions — including returning to work as a new mom. Their grace, flexibility, and strength were game-changing. Now that I’ve grown in my own role, I try to pay that forward by mentoring younger women at my company and connecting others in the Tampa community. Networking leads to jobs, referrals, and new opportunities. Sharing what I’ve learned is one of the best ways I can give back."
You are deeply involved in community leadership, including Junior League, HBA, Emerging Leaders, and WTE, just to name a few. For women hoping to get more involved in their communities, how do you suggest they get started?
"Start by finding your passion and purpose. For me, that began with healthcare-focused networking groups. From there, I branched into other spaces by simply asking people what they were involved in. That led me to incredible organizations across Tampa. You don’t have to be as involved as I am, but each group I’m part of brings something special — whether it’s supporting STEM, creating volunteer opportunities, or connecting women to new roles and resources. Choose what aligns with your values and go from there."
You are generously giving your time, talent, and treasure to Women in Tech & Entrepreneurship as a Board Member and as a Sponsor — what impact do you hope to create for women in our community through your giving?
"It’s an honor to give back. I want to show up, connect women, and support the leaders across WTE’s Florida chapters. They’re doing so much — helping women return to work, access events, and discover opportunities they didn’t know existed. My hope is that through sponsorship, these leaders feel recognized and valued. We don’t do it for recognition, but it matters. I wanted to honor the women who are investing their time and energy in others."
You're passionate about birding, raising Monarch butterflies, and gardening with your son. Do you notice these practices showing up with you in the boardroom or providing you with a unique perspective on the tech sector?
"Absolutely. Nature is unpredictable, and that teaches you a lot. I can plant seeds, water them, and still see nothing grow — and that’s humbling. It’s the same in business. You can use every resource wisely and still not control the outcome. But you learn. You tweak. You evolve. Being outdoors also refocuses and re-energizes me after chaotic days. It reminds me to do my best, learn from the process, and keep growing — both personally and professionally."
Looking ahead, how do you see technology shaping the future of healthcare, and what innovations are you most excited to see take hold?
"I’m really intrigued by the direct-to-consumer space — things like sleep tracking, fertility apps, and other wellness tools. The data these tools collect can be used to predict or prevent illness before people even know they’re at risk. When used ethically and safely, that’s powerful. AI is also helping us detect genetic markers, like circulating DNA, to identify cancer early. Any technology that empowers people to live healthier lives — especially in a preventive way — excites me.
